Current Practices & Strategies Used to Alleviate Congestion Through Roving Around Jeepney Terminals

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Together with Baguio City Chief Traffic Enforcement Unit PLTCOL DAUSEN, we conducted roving around terminals of jeepneys in the Central Business District of Baguio City to address issues and concerns regarding the boundaries of parking spaces for jeepneys.

One of the busiest places in Baguio City is the Central Business District (CBD). It is a center of economic activity since the streets are lined with businesses like stores, offices, and eateries. However, parking is now a significant problem due to the growth in vehicles in the city. Driver disagreements over parking space limits are common due to the narrow roadways and few parking places.[1]

The Chief TEU decided to take a proactive approach to this problem by roaming about the jeepney terminals in the CBD. Talking to drivers, passengers, and business owners was part of my plan to better understand their issues and come up with a solution that would work for everyone. One of the main issues we encountered was confusion over the designated parking spaces. Many drivers were unsure of where they were supposed to park their vehicles, leading to overlapping spaces and disputes. The Chief TEU suggested that clear markings be made on the road to indicate where each vehicle should park. This would help avoid any confusion and reduce the risk of disputes. Another concern we heard from business owners was the difficulty in accessing their shops due to parked vehicles. The drivers themselves expressed their frustration with the lack of parking spaces in the CBD. PLTCOL DAUSEN encouraged them to park their vehicles in designated parking lots outside the CBD and take public transportation to the terminals. This will help reduce the city's carbon footprint in addition to lowering the number of vehicles on the road.

In summary, resolving the parking space boundary concerns in Baguio City's central business district will require cooperation from all parties involved. Together, we can identify solutions that are advantageous to all parties and enhance the general experience of local drivers, passengers, and business owners.

Leaders that address problems and issues in their sector are more likely to succeed in reaching their objectives. This is because they can spot issues early on and take action before they get too large to handle. Furthermore, by addressing issues and concerns, leaders show that they are invested in the success of their sector and are willing to put in the work to make it a success.
